About IIM Trivandrum Chapter

The first meeting of the members of IIM and potential members around 40 was held in August 1979 and the meeting was chaired by Dr. Brahm Prakash, the then Director, VSSC. Stating the long-standing interest in the field of metallurgy and material science, Dr. Brahm Prakash stressed the need for having a local chapter of IIM in Kerala, and effecting this, a resolution was adopted unanimously by the members to from a chapter. After the approval of governing body, IIM Trivandrum Chapter was founded in 1980 with Dr. P.K. Rohatgi, then Director of Regional Research Laboratory, CSIR, Trivandrum as the Chairman. Since then, the chapter has been very active and has organized more than fifty International, National Seminars and Workshops with a wide participation of the metallurgical community from all parts of the country.

In the year 1987, the young chapter had the proud privilege of hosting the prestigious Silver Jubilee Session of the National Metallurgists’ Day (NMD) and 41 st Annual Technical Meeting (ATM) of The Indian Institute of Metals at Trivandrum. Again in the year 2004, the Chapter had hosted 42 nd National Metallurgists’ Day, 58 th Annual Technical Meeting and International Symposium on Metal and Materials from Titanium Minerals at Trivandrum. The Chapter has also instituted Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Lecture to commemorate the services rendered by late Prof. Brahm Prakash to the chapter. This is held as a part of the National Seminar being conducted every year by the chapter. For the benefit of the members, the chapter is regularly arranging lectures from distinguished metallurgists visiting the region either alone or in association with other professional bodies. Through MET NEWS, the chapter news letter, the chapter publishes the important professional activities and achievements of the members. To promote interest on metals and materials among the students, chapter also arranges metals and materials Quiz programme for the students of the schools of this region. The winners of this competition are selected to represent the chapter in the national level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz being held every year at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. Also the chapter confers Prof.Brahm Prakash Best M.Tech. and Ph.D. Thesis awards and Best Published Papers ( young and senior research categories) to the members to promote quality research in Metallurgy and Materials Science. The chapter also celebrates the Foundation Day of IIM on 24 th February by arranging lectures by senior and eminent metallurgists. Over the years the members of the chapter had won many prestigious IIM and NMD awards in addition to many other awards conferred for their professional excellence. The Chapter is proud and privileged to host the 57 th National Metallurgists’ Day, 73 rd Annual Technical Meeting and International Symposium on “Advanced Materials for Industrial and Societal Applications” again at Thiruvananthapuram.

About IIM Chennai Chapter

IIM Chennai Chapter was established in 1960s and functions from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology Madras and has a membership of more than 200. The main objective of the chapter is to disseminate knowledge in the field of metals, materials and metallurgy in this part of the country. This is achieved by arranging lectures by eminent metallurgists, conducting workshops, organizing seminars, courses, etc. The chapter has arranged a large number of lecture talks by eminent scientists, industrialists and experts from India and abroad. The Chennai Chapter has also conducted many workshops / courses / seminars by national and international experts. The chapter is also a Centre for conducting examinations leading to Associate Membership of IIM.

The Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai Chapter, in association with Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME), IIT Madras has been organising biennial National Symposium of Research Scholars (NSRS) since 1996. The success of the four symposia culminated into first ever International Symposium of Research Students (ISRS) on Materials Science and Engineering (ISRS 2004). Though there are a number of symposia organized regularly worldwide, the research students do not get enough opportunity to share their work in these symposia. Hence, symposium ISRS is devoted solely to the research students (both MS and PhD students). Till date 7 ISRS symposia have been conducted, the last one being in 2016.

The IIM Chennai Chapter had helped in organizing the National Metallurgist Day and Annual Technical Meeting of IIM in Chennai on 1977 and 2005. It also helped in organization of the NMD celebrations held in Coimbatore in 2015. The IIM Chennai Chapter also organized International Conference and Expo on Magnesium (iMagCon-2016) in 2016 in association with Vellore Institute of Technology Chennai.

IIM Chennai Chapter has been conducting preliminaries of Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz every year for Class XI and XII students of various schools in Chennai. Two teams are selected and they represent IIM Chennai Chapter in the National Level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz at Kalpakkam. IIM Chennai Chapter along with IIM Kalpakkam Chapter organizes Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture every year on the 5th of October in the memory of Dr. Placid Rodriguez, former director of IGCAR Kalpakkam. The venue for the lecture alternates every year between Kalpakkam and IIT Madras. Till date, 10 distinguished personalities, namely Prof. Atul Chokshi, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2009), Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, National University of Singapore (2010), Dr. Srikanth, Director, NML, Jamshedpur (2011), Prof. B.S. Murty, IIT, Madras (2012), Prof. Indranil Manna, Director, IIT Kanpur (2013), Dr. Amol A. Gokhale, Director, DMRL Hyderabd (2014), Dr. G. K. Dey, Associate Director, Materials Group, BARC, Mumbai (2015), Dr. A.K. Bhaduri, Director, IGCAR, Kalpakkam (2016), Dr. U. Kamachi Mudali, Chairman & Chief Executive, HWB, Mumbai (2017), Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Distinguished Scientist & Director General, Naval Systems and Materials, DRDO (2018) have presented the PRML lecture.
